Random acts of ‘free food’ Tuesday in Mandarin

Skewered as they’ve been of late with pink slime, Red China’s screams of tainted beef and dire earnings reports, McDonald’s recently scored a W in a game global brands love to play: Super Bowl advertising buzz. By broadcasting its new “Lovin'” form of random-act-of-kindness payment during the big game, Mickey D’s unearthed a smidge of much-needed Coke-like feelgood currency.

Whether you chalk it up to a marketing stunt, or the real thing, random acts of kindness make human beings feel good, whether we’re the giver, the getter or the Instagrammer.

Apparently not-quite-as-global food brands are getting in on this game, too.

To commemorate Random Acts of Kindness Day (who knew there was such a thing?) on Tuesday, Feb. 17, Mandarin’s Cabana Grill is handing out (at no less, random!) coupons for free food from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. They say it’s an effort to encourage folks to pay the gesture forward for others.

They’re also hoping you’ll share the aftermath of your forward-paying at #RandomActsofTacos. Personally, I think #RandomActsForTacos makes a little more sense, but I don’t do their marketing strategery.

So the moral of this blog post is: go and do good things. Not because a smart device is watching you, but because you love your fellow human. And you like tacos.

Cabana Grill’s at 10422 San Jose Blvd., just north of I-295.
